Holocaust Survivors Who Benefit from Hardship Fund May Qualify for Additional Homecare Hours

Excerpt from Yiddish article in Der Yid’s Friday, July 12, 2019 edition

Agreement with the German government and the Claims Conference increases the maximum weekly allowable hours for household and homecare help to 56 hours for survivors.

Brooklyn, NY –Williamsburg UJO is pleased with the increased allowable hours that Holocaust survivors who benefit from the Hardship Fund may now be eligible for. This will result in more home care hours, which will help survivors with their housekeeping, homecare, etc. This increase is a result of the new agreement with the German government, which increased the maximum homecare hours that may be provided for this category for Holocaust survivors. The increase is for up to 56 hours per week.

The UJO provides various services for close to 600 Williamsburg survivors through the programs funded by the Claims Conference and various government agencies such as the NYC Holocaust Initiative and other NYS funding. Among the services provided is Homecare.

Thanks to Assemblyman  David Buchwald from Westchester who helped to intervene to acquire additional funding for the Holocaust survivors. Assemblyman Buchwald, went out of his way to contact the German government to press them to provide the additional hours after hearing how necessary the increase would be for the survivors.

Assemblyman Buchwald is the great-grandchild of Rabbi Shmuel Avraham Rabinowitz, the Brownsviller Rebbe, one of the first rebbes in America. The Assemblyman’s grandfather, Rabbi  Baruch Rabinowitz lobbied congress for the Emergency Committee to rescue Jews in Europe during World War II  as the Committee worked to inform Washington and unite the world against Nazi murders. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and Assemblyman Buchwald is also a devoted advocate for Holocaust survivors.

The UJO thanks Assemblyman Buchwald for his devoted and successful intervention in this issue.
